Australia/New Zealand 1989 - Lamington National Park

Oct 4, 1989 Upon arriving at Sydney at 7:30 AM, I booked an overnight Skyliner bus to Brisbane. I spent the day seeing some of the touristy sights of Sydney, such as the Rocks, the Botanical Gardens, and the Art Museum. I also gave blood at the Red Cross office. It took at least 7 people to process the extraction of my blood, a very inefficient operation.

The bus transportation was first rate, comfortable coaches and VCR movies. However, trying to sleep was very difficult. After arriving in Brisbane, I spent a couple of days looking around Brisbane and preparing for my Lamington National Park excursion. I went to the Queensland museum in Brisbane. While browsing through the museum shop, I saw a book on Aussie snakes. I became almost sick reading about the venomous snakes and the futility of trying to treat a bite. I was very apprehensive about hiking in the bush.

Oct 7, 19891 took the Mountain Coach to Binna Burra, a campsite and hotel at the entrance of Lamington National Park. Walking the Cave Circuit, I saw a bush turkey making a nest. Also met an English couple that had first met in 1980 at the Edwards Hotel in Huarez, Peru (the gringo hotel Bernie, Rick & I did not stay at in 1988).

The next day I packed my backpack and hiked the Coomera Falls route. The rainforest was actually quite dry, there not having been any rain in 2 months time. The forest was still scenic and green. I camped past Mt Merino. I had run out of water and had to hike about 1.5 kilometers toward O'Reilly's before I came upon a waterfall.
