Oct 27, 1989 Paul took me to Port Melbourne for the 6:00 PM ferry to Tasmania. Talked with Christine, Belgium woman I had met in Nimbin. After arriving at Devonport at 8:00, I took a bus to Cradle Mountain with Phalim O'Reilly. Phalim was an Irish actuary working in Melbourne. The first days hike involved a lot of uphill in a wet drizzle. I soon found out that Phalim was very ill-equipped for this hike. I lent him my rain poncho, gaiters, and shared my water bottle. We got to Waterfall Hut the first night.
