In early 1993 I sent in an application to the Citizens Democracy Corps (CDC), a non-profit US organization designed to assist former eastern bloc countries with the transition to a free market economy. Soon after, the application was quickly matched to a request for assistance from a life insurance company in Sofia, Bulgaria. The company had requested an actuarial volunteer several months previously.

I readily accepted the two month assignment, initially being told that they desired assistance with product development, financial reserve liabilities, and underwriting. It started early April, 1993 and ended in June 1993.

Following the assignment I traveled in parts of Eastern Europe and visited relatives in Germany.
