Bulgaria 1994 - Trip End & Loose Ends

Photo: News article on murder

A few days later I took the flight back to the US.

Murder In late 1995 I got a call from Susan Berger in Washington DC, who was on vacation from Bulgaria. She told me that one of the BG Plan directors had been murdered and that Plamen was a suspect. He had been in jail for a few months. See article at above right.

Later I heard that he had been released. Konstantine, also a suspect, had also been jailed and released. However many of the employees, including those I worked mostly with, had gone on to other jobs.

Remote work In mid 1998, I exchanged a series of emails with Radka, apparently a part time actuary with BG Plan. We worked out pricing on a term product.

The End In late 1998, from Radka, I learned that BG Plan was trying to develop a rehabilitation plan to save it from insolvency. Radka sent be an explanation of the restucturing plan and asked me for my support, which I was unable to give. The rehab plan eventually failed and BG Plan is history.

Article In 1995 I wrote an article for the International Section News of the Society of Actuaries, entitled "Insurance in Bulgaria – 1994 Impressions",
