Bolivia & Peru 1997 - Cuzco

Thursday, June 5, 1997 I wake up and Bernie is signaling me with a flashlight from the matrimonial bed that it is time for the run up Sacsayhuaman. Mary goes along as well. On Plateros, the street is filling up with beer tents and vendors getting ready for a big Corpus Christi celebration.

After the jog, we all go to Cafe Haylliy for breakfast. Rick and Jan are feeling better and eat something. Outside food vendors are selling roasted cuy (guinea pig), popcorn, roasted corn, and other goodies. Norma gave us back the large room.

Rick, Jan, and Bernie go up to tour Sacsayhuaman. Mary, Josh, and I go to return unused benzina, check airline reservations, and souvenir shopping. We had lunch at a cafe just off the square. In the afternoon was a big procession of religious statues around the Plaza de Armas. During the day we went through the beer drinking, cuy devouring crowd many times, but were never threatened by pickpockets. There were quite a number of security guards or police on duty.

We had laundry done by a place that advertises laundry done in 2 and 4 hours. Although we deliver the laundry at 9 AM, we don't get it until 6:30 PM. That night we all had roast chicken and chips for dinner. This was more a place for Peruvians than tourist gringos. Unfortunately, Mary was now getting sick.
