Bolivia & Peru 1997 - La Paz

Saturday, June 7, 1997 I am reminded of the movie, Groundhog Day, as we repeat yesterday's efforts getting up and going to the airport. This time we actually do fly to La Paz. At La Paz airport we check in for the night flight to Miami. After a van ride downtown, we see the Art Museum. The old building was more interesting than the exhibits. Despite the previous days strike, everything seems normal. We tour the artisans market next to the cathedral.

For lunch we have today's special at a cafe. For $2 I get vegetable soup, bread, radish salad, roast chicken plus a potato/carrot salad, and a suspect orange creme for dessert. Next we tour the Witches Market a short distance away. There woman sell llama fetuses, talisman, herbs, and other concoctions.

Mary, Josh, and I return to the airport early. With airport workers we watch a soccer match between France and England on Bolivian TV. We also see reruns of Star Trek and Friends. The flight to Miami leaves on time.

Postscript: Jan returned to Rapid City to find a 7 ton boulder had rolled through her kitchen wall, destroyed her kitchen table, her fireplace, and went through her floor into the basement. A few days later, while she was still gone, the bridge to her house was destroyed by a flash flood.

Rick lost 15 pounds from being sick. He recovered soon after returning home, as did Mary.
