Camino de Santiago: Mauleon Licharre to St Jean Pied du Port

Countryside road

November 11, 2019 I left Maaleon at 7:30 AM and it was not raining. I got to Ordiarp and had a coffee in the bar. The bartender told me he used to work in New York and had been to the Sturgis rally. He urged me to hurry to St Just Ibarre as rain was coming in the afternoon.

Though it did rain later, it was not heavy. I got to the gite by 5 PM. Nice place, it is on a farm of sheep and 3 Scottish cattle. The wife served me some tea when I got there and later had a beer.

November 12, 2019 They served a huge breakfast of rice porridge, bread, jams, and strong coffee. It rained off and on, but never very hard.

I got to St Jean Pied du Port about 1:00, everything was closed for lunch. The pilgrim's office helped me with getting information and suggestions.

I had planned on taking a train to the north Spanish coast and walking the Camino del Norte, but I had become concerned about it being more difficult to find places to stay since it is a less popular route. So walking the Camino Frances again would mean seeing more pilgrims, easier to find accommodation, and maybe less rain.

I checked into the pilgrim's municipal hostel. There are about 10 pilgrim's here, just in the hostel room. Over the last 3+ weeks I had only seen 7 pilgrims the entire time. I bought a Camino Frances map guide and a new microfiber towel to replace the one I left in Arudy. Had a pizza for dinner.
