Photo: Blown up bridge
November 18, 1983 I took a morning bus to the Mexican border. The mountain scenery was very spectacular. 4 bridges along the road had been blown up by rebel guerrillas in recent months. About every 10-15 miles the bus was stopped so that the men on the bus could be checked for ID and at one point body searched. This part of northern Guatemala was a site of much trouble between the right wing government and the persecuted Indian population. Thousands of the Indians had fled across the border into Mexico.
At the border I had to unpack all my belongings for the border guards. One of the guards threw two Guatemalan fiber nets to one side and told me they were not allowed in Mexico. When he left I picked up the nets and put them back in my pack, then walked across the border. I arrived in San Cristobal de las Cases in the late afternoon. Stayed at the Margarita House.
