November 20, 1983 I caught the 8:00 AM bus to Palenque. All of the tourists, Americans, Swiss, French, and Japanese had to stand because the locals had gotten on first. Although the distance was 100 miles, the trip took 6 hours. The twisting road through the mountains was rough. As the scenery changed to humid jungle, a seat became available. I had stood for five hours.
