Nepal 2008 - Everest: Jiri to Junbesi

Photo: Typical Nepali bus

October 25, 2008 I was up early for the 7AM bus to Jiri. The super deluxe bus looked similar to the typical Nepal bus at right, an old clunker.I actually had an assigned seat. There were 6 other tourists among the mostly Nepalese riders.

It was a very scenic trip on a rough road, arriving at Jiri late in the afternoon. I stayed at a lodge with very pleasant owners, but they too were insistent that I hire a guide and porter. Also staying at the lodge were 3 Nepali teachers taking a brief vacation in Jiri. Also visiting was a family member who has been working in Saudi Arabia for several years as a butcher. The Nepalis expressed their dislike of Muslims.

October 26, 2008 I got an early start on the trail that started just out of Jiri. The trail was easy to follow. When I was uncertain I asked for directions. Initially the trail followed an unfinished road. The road is meant to have motorized vehicles, but money ran out before it was completed.

My backpack weighed probably no more than 25 lbs. I had a sleeping bag, extra clothes, and a few essentials. No need for tent, cooking gear, or food. Had a lunch in Shivalaya of fried rice and vegetables.
