Peru 1988 - Q'oyllur Riti

Sunday, May 29, 1988 We took our packs down to the square to take a bus to Ocangate. Instead we decided to take a truck, which we ended up sharing with about 60 other Peruvians. We were the only gringos.

Over very rough mountain roads, the skillful driver safely manuvered the truck. As we approached a 15,000' pass, the Peruvians chewed coco leaves to counter the effects of altitude. One girl got sick and the others suggested many cures. Much of the time I had a headache and a motion sickness feeling. During the eight hour trip we filled out passenger lists many times, with our name and occupation.

It was night when we reached the camp near the mountain festival. We put the tent up in an area where horses were grazing. All night we heard people going up the mountain to the festival.
