Photo: Beginning of Inca Trail, soon after km 88
Monday, June 6, 1988 We got up at 4:00 AM and went to the train station. We got in our place at the end of a long line to buy tickets. The train left at 5:30 AM, and did much track switching to get out of the valley Cuzco sat in. There were many vendors on the train. As in the streets of Cuzco and Lima, many of these vendors were young children selling cigarettes, cakes, candy, bread, fruit, etc. They would spend their entire day riding the train in order to make some money.
We got to Kilometer 88 at 6:30 AM and bought our Inca Trail ticket for 1600 Intis. The first day hiking was very difficult. It was very steep and we gained almost a mile in altitude the first day. Along the way we bought Coca Cola from a very attractive campesino woman living in an adobe house. We camped on about the only flat piece of ground we saw that day.
