Peru 1988 - Huaraz

Saturday, June 11, 1988 We took an early morning taxi to the airport for our flight to Lima. On arrival at Lima we contacted Betsey of the South American Explorers Club, who luckily was around despite it being her day off. We were able to drop off some gear. We checked into the Youth Hostel for 300 Intis per night. We had lunch at the Natural Restaurant and changed money. Following that, we bought seats for bus ride to Huaraz. Dinner that night was at a small but great fish restaurant, Yugis, near the Youth Hostel. The best chocolate cake in Peru!

Sunday, June 12, 1988 The 8:00 AM bus to Huaraz left at 9:00. After a fair distance we were out of Lima, and on the Pan American highway on the coast. The scenery was a lifeless landscape, mostly sand and an occasional town. Later, as we climbed higher in the mountains, the vegetation grew richer. Lunch was at a roadside cafe where I had a bad tostado and worse coffee. We got to Huaraz at 7:30 PM. At the bus station a young man, Hugo, invited us to stay at his house for 130 Intis per night. We checked into his home that he shares with his wife Anna, and then had a pizza at a local pizza place.
