In 1985 I signed up for a 2 week September vacation in the Russian Caucasus mountains. It was coordinated through the adventure travel company Mountain Travel. It was an opportunity to go to Russia, especially at a time that changes were underway. Earlier in 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev had come to power and had started the changes that would eventually lead to the end of the USSR.

Initially, the participants would meet in Moscow and then travel to the Caucasus mountains. We would be based in Russia, near Mt Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. Also it was very near the border with Georgia.
