Russia 1985 - Caucasus 1st Days

Our bus departed at 3:00 PM for the 4 hour trip to our Caucasus hotel. The bus took us past mostly smaller towns and agricultural land. The towns were a little more colorful than Moscow, yet habitation was characterized by small houses and multilevel apartment buildings. Bus stops were brightly painted concrete shelters. The farm land featured cornfields, hayfields, and fields of grain. Although tractors were occasionally seen, a more frequent sight were horses, carts, hand hoes, etc. I noticed some farmers selling jars of honey alongside the road. The rolling farmland eventually gave way to the more dramatic mountain scenes of the Caucasus Mountains. We stopped once in a small town and looked through an open market in which villagers sold their woolen goods.

Upon arrival at the hotel we were assigned rooms and then fed supper at 8:00 PM. I shared a room with Mitch and Paul, two southern Californians. In the next room was Taya and her husband, Sasha. The 2 rooms shared a room with a toilet and a room with a shower. All others in the hotel had the same arrangement.
