Ralph Kopp grew up on a cattle ranch near Rapid City,South Dakota. He and his 5 siblings attended a one room schoolhouse, Lone Tree, until 1965. Ralph attended Douglas High School and then enrolled at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
After attaining a college degree in mathematics he entered the insurance actuarial profession and pursued the Society of Actuaries exams, passing the final one in 1981. During his actuarial career he worked for various employers in South Dakota, Missouri, Texas and Oregon.
