Spain 2001 - Basque Region

On June 3 I took an overnite bus to Bilbao. It got off to a shaky start when the bus driver backed into another bus. That delayed us about 45 minutes on what otherwise was about a 12 hour trip.

June 4, 2001 I arrived in Bilbao at 5 AM. Later that morning I found a pension, had a shower, then took a bus to Guernica.

The museum there had much information about the bombing by Franco and Hitler of the city in 1937. The section pertaining to Spanish Basque prisoners of Franco were very interesting. It was a pleasant town still living with a somber past. Many of the local people were older and there were very few other tourists. I took the train back to Bilbao.

June 5, 2001 I went to the Guggenheim Museum, well known for its unusual building design. It had two large mazes that visitors could walk through. A large laser cone was interesting to crawl under inside. Another exhibit was a space of floor, walls, and ceiling painted entirely white, creating an illusion. There were two large temporary exhibits, one of fashion designer Armani's clothes.
