March 30, 2024 I had arrived in Madrid a couple of days earlier. I took an Alsa bus to Ponferrada that arrived on a rainy late afternoon. I walked about a mile to the albergue. It was a little familiar, I had stayed there 10 years earlier when I walked from Le Puy to Santiago.
The Albergue San Nicolas de Flue is a large albergue, with a capacity for 140 pilgrims. As a hospitalero, I had a room with 3 bunk beds and a bathroom I shared with the other hospitaleros. The hospitaleros also had a small kitchen separate from the pilgrims kitchen.
San Nicolas is the patron saint of Switzerland. Much of his life, 1417 to 1487, he lived as a hermit and was well respected for his views and morals.
