South America 2007 - Argentina Lake District

February 25, 2007 I took the bus to San Martin de los Andes, across the border in Argentina. It was a very rough road and the bus made many long stops. The border was easy. An Irish man joked with an Argentine border guard that he had a bomb in his baggage. Oddily enough, the guard thought that was funny and did not give the brash Irish man any trouble.

After crossing the border, it was noticeably drier. The landscape reminded me of eastern Wyoming.

San Martin was a very nice pleasant small tourist town. Most businesses close from 2 PM to 5 PM. After checking into a hostal, I had a great hamburger for dinner at a local bar. The local time was 4 hours ahead of Mountain Standard Time and the evening was light out until about 8:30 PM.

Tuesday, I walked to the northside of Lago Lacar to visit a local Mapuche village and get some nice views of the area. I enjoyed an additional slow day in San Martin. In Argentina I am able to get really good coffee, not the Nescafe or worse that Chile and Peru offer.
