South America 2007 - Choquequirao

Sunday, April 22, 2007 I had been told that the group tour Choquequirao was 4 people, but the only other tourist was Peter from London. We took a taxi with our guide Rafael to the bus station. The bus left at 6:30 AM and arrived at the road to Cachora about 9:30. A rough 12 mile taxi ride got us to Cachora, the start of the trek. Also along was Washington, the cook. In Cachora we met the arrieo and his mule.

We started hiking after lunch and soon found out that our guide had never been to Choquequirao, did not know the way, and knew nothing about the site. Washington knew the trail, which was actually quite easy to follow. It was fairly level for about 2 hours and then dropped rather steeply toward the river below. We reached the first campsite about 5:30 PM.

The next morning we were up early and started hiking by 6:30 AM. After reaching the river and crossing the bridge, we then climbed 5000 feet to the 2nd campsite, arriving about 10:30 AM.
