On Tuesday, May 1 I took a 24 hour bus from Cusco to Ayacucho. Most of the road was unpaved, very rough , and mountainous. At one point the bus stopped because a large truck had overturned and was blocking the road. There was just enough room for the bus to get by.
Ayacucho was a pleasant city in the highlands and known for its many churches. It was also known as the center for the Sendero Luminoso in the 1980 s and 90 s. There were very few gringo tourists.
