South America 1992 - Bolivia

May 6, 1992 I learned that others at the Max Paredes Hotel had to travel to the scene of a bus accident on the Road of Death a few days earlier. They had to identify friends that were victims of the tragedy. Apparently a truck went over the edge and fell hundreds of feet to land on top of the bus.

I went to the Peruvian Embassy to inquire about visa, which I found wasn t necessary. Then went to the small, but interesting, Folk Museum and the National Art Museum, which had mostly older religious paintings. I had diarrhea and took an extra anti-diarrheal pill.

In the afternoon went to the bus station for overnight bus to Sucre. As I got on bus an older man tried to steal my wallet, which was inside a zippered pocket on my pants. He got the zipper open, but not the wallet, then quickly left the bus.

It was a cold, sleepless night on the bus. At daylight we reached Potosi. The surrounding landscape was semiarid hills, reminding me of South Dakota. Later the road scenery got to be very mountainous and dry. The road itself was mostly gravel or dirt. We arrived in Sucre at 2 PM. I saw a little of Sucre with another traveler on the bus, Elaine, a secretary from Hong Kong.

The next two days I met Elaine to tour around the town. Saw some churches and museums. The 3 university museums were the best.

On Sunday, we took an early bus to the Indian market at Tarabuca. Tarabuca is well known for some elegant and pricey black and red weavings. The ride was very dusty and scenic. The market was disappointing, although the Indian costumes and food market scene were good. Some of the Indian men would be decked out in native costume, except for a baseball cap that might say Uriah Heap .
