South America 1992 - North Equador trek

Photo: Rick at La Casona

July 12, 1992 We joined up with Piet, a Netherlands man living in Quito, for a hike to a highland rainforest in Carchi. There were 10 people total. Because we had larger backpacks, Rick and I carried much of the food. Part of what I had was cooked rice and spaghetti sauce. We took a bus to El Angel.

The next morning we all took a pickup to the paramor. From there we hiked down into the rainforest, the land that is owned by Piet. It rained much of the time we were in the rainforest, and the trail (??) had to be hacked out by Piet with a machete. When we emerged from the rainforest late in the day, the rain stopped. We stayed in a hut that belonged to Piet.
