June 1, 1978 Though extremely sore from yesterday we hike to the top of Mt Oberon and around Whiskey Bay before leaving Wilsons Prom. We drove to Frankston and stayed at Peter & Geri’s. Geri was an American teacher from Carmichael, California.

June 2, 1978 A blustery winter day. Paul & I drove along the coast south of Melbourne. We intended to see Penguin Island (famed for the thousands of penguins who walk onto the island in the evening) but the ferry wasn’t running. Patch came down to Geri’s and we spent the evening watching science fiction movies.

June 3, 1978 Had a steak lunch at a hotel at hamburger prices. Then we all went To the Melbourne Science Museum, a movie and then to the Pancake Parlour, Paul’s favorite restaurant.

June 4, 1978 We drove up to the Dandenongs, a small touristy mountain range east of Melbourne.

June 5, 1978 Patch, Paul & I went to the Melbourne Art Gallery. I also got to see my first “footie” (Australian Rules Football) match. The most popular sport in Victoria, it was cross between rugby and soccer. By halftime most of the fans were drunk and cursing, so we left.

June 6, 1978 We took the trams from Moonie Ponds into Melbourne. I visited with a Colonial Mutual Life actuary about the possibility of jobs in Australia. He was encouraging. That night we stayed at Meg & Johns.

June 7, 1978 Drove to the Grampians. On the way we stopped at Ballarat to go thru a tourist gold mine camp. We stayed the night at the Hells Gap Youth Hostel in the womans dorm.
