Aus/NZ 1978 - Road to Adelaide

Photo: Blow Hole

June 11, 1978 From Warronbool we visited Port Fairy and Portland, two interesting seaside towns. The road then took us to the “Blowhole”, the highest point along the Victorian coastline. Watching the terrific force of the ocean’s waves on this rocky coast was very impressive sight. We camped in a caravan park in Mt Gambier, near an extinct volcano.

June 12, 1978 We climbed Mt Gambier then traveled the rest of the way to Adelaide. On each side of the road a single row of native trees hid the forests of non-native pine beyond. While coming down the mountains into Adelaide Bongo lost 1st gear, 2nd gear, 4th gear and reverse.

June 13, 1978 While Paul got Bongo fixed, I booked a bus trip to the Outback. It had been almost 10 years since I had seen skirts as short as the ones I saw today. That evening we listened to some acoustical guitar at North Adelaide coffee houses.

June 14, 1978 We toured the Mt Lofty wildlife sanctuary and then some of the wine country south of Adelaide. That night we saw the Greece and Australian national soccer teams play. Most everyone in the crowd around us spoke Greek or Italian. The entire stadium cheered as the Greek team scored the games only goal.

June 15, 1978 North of Adelaide in the Barossa Valley is the best wine country in Australia. There is still much evidence of the German culture left by the early settlers of this picturesque valley. We stopped at a few wineries for samples. Good tasting rose’s, whites, and sparkling’s were $1.50 to $3.00 a bottle. That night we saw Catch 22 in an old, decorative Port Adelaide theatre.

June 16, 1978 We toured the Adelaide National Museum, went to the Central Market, and saw an Australian movie “Picnic at Hanging Rock.” The movie concerned the disappearance of a girl at Hanging Rock about 80 years ago. Hanging Rock is almost directly opposite the Bermuda Triangle.

June 17, 1978 Paul took me to the Adelaide Youth Hostel to leave my bags there as I would be staying there that night. However, since the hostel closed early in the day, I had to leave the bags at the railroad station. Paul left with Bongo headed for Melbourne. He had to make a detour to Coonwarra to deliver to John a few bottles of his favorite wine.

June 18, 1978 Early in the morning I ran around the large park that encircles the inner city of Adelaide. Adelaide is a very well planned city. I spent quiet day studying pensions at the public library. Many of the others at the hostel were well traveled. I heard gruesome stories about Asia travel and distressing tales of being broken down for days in the Outback.

AUSSIE FOOD:

Chiko Roll- a chicken and vegetable concoction shaped like a burrito.

Meat pies - Often had a meat filling of questionable origin

The Lot – A hamburger which could include all of cheese, tomato, onion, lettuce, egg, bacon, and pineapple

Vegemite – a yeast extract that looks and tastes like paste. Despite that native Aussies love it.
