Saturday, May 31, 1997 Norma was to get us at 6:20 AM at the hotel and the train was scheduled to depart at 6:40. At 6:30 Norma had still not showed, so we flagged down a couple taxis and got to the train station with a couple minutes to spare.
On the way out of Cuzco the last train car had problems, which were resolved after about a 30 minute stop. Bernie played with a little girl, especially using his bubble blowing kit. Food available on the train included bread, coffee, cheese and meat sandwiches, choclo (corn), and other goodies. About 10 AM we reached kilometer 88 and got out to start the trek. After paying the $17 fee, we register and then cross the bridge over the swift Urubamba River. The elevation is 7,200 feet at the start.
