Bolivia & Peru 1997 - Inca Trail

Photo: Snack stop on Inca Trail

We started hiking at 10:30 AM. It was a pleasant sunny day, much like all the other days we have had. We soon see the ruins of Llactapata, just above the trail. Some hikers seemed to be having trouble breathing on the uphill sections after about an hour into the hike. At the lunch stop, we noted that plastic garbage cans were placed at various locations on the trail. This is one of many welcome improvements In the Inca Trail.

After lunch the trail becomes very steep. A British women, Miranda, is having a difficult time. Her companions hire a local to carry her pack to the campsite at Liulluchapampa. Rick hires a boy to do the same for Jan, but he only carries Jan's pack to a nearby clearing. Rick and Bernie go ahead, followed by Josh and I, and then Mary and Jan. I am exhausted when I reach the Llulluchapampa campsite at 12,000 feet altitude. We manage to put up the tents before 6:00 PM, while there is still a little light. We camp near the British, a group of Germans, and a loud bunch of Peruvians.

A young German asked Jan about one of his companion's. His friend was throwing up, had a headache, and was very weak. The German, whose father was a physician, had more drugs than Mary.
