Apr 13, 1979 The boat arrived in port at 8 AM. I started the 50 mile ride to Thiva but got my directions wrong and instead ended up in Athens. Soon after I got headed the right way I broke a spoke. It did not take long to fix and soon was on my way. Later I damaged the front rim on the rough mountainous road.
Much of the land was barren until 10 miles from Thiva, where the scenery opened up onto a fertile valley. Many farmers used plows and horse.

Apr 14, 1979 For most of the 90 miles to Lamia the road was mostly flat, but about 20 miles from the town it led uphill. Near the top of the mountain 2 German tourists stopped me and asked where the monument to the Spartans was. Unfortunately I did not know. The rest of the way was downhill and then flat.
In Lamia some Greek kids recommended a hotel nearby, but at $6 I thought it was too high. So I rode another 5 miles to the mountains above Lamia. I camped out in some shrubs which was also a grazing area for goats.
