Apr 29, 1979 I was looking forward to biking on more biker friendly roads. However, after I left Dubrovnik headed north, I saw the same signs barring bicycles and motorbikes. I did ride by police who gave me no trouble. Still the coastal road was narrow, mountainous and dangerous. The only alternative route, which I did not take, was a rough dirt road through the mountains.

After 45 miles I reached Neum. It started raining and I ended up sharing a private accommodation with two music students. The young landlady loaned me her hairdryer to dry my rainsoaked hair, but when it was plugged in it shorted out.

Apr 30, 1979 I rode 35 miles to Zaostrog on the coast. I had a flat, only the second in 2,500 miles. Two young men drinking brandy and playing basketball helped me find a campground. The drunker of the two rode my bike through the camp and gave it another flat. Camping in the small town was free. I played soccer with a couple of other campers.
