Europe 1979 - Yugoslavia

Photo: Sunday pickup soccer game

May 6, 1979 I watched a local neighborhood soccer game on this pleasant Sunday morning. Blacky was the goalie for one of the teams. Although I did not know what they were saying, the players verbally taunted each other much of the game.

In the afternoon, I saw a few of the old Zadar churches. I also saw the American movie, Convoy, for 80 cents. It was in the original English, with Croation subtitles. Record albums were priced around $3-4 each.

Blacky told me of conflicts between Serbs and Croats and that only Tito keeps them together. There is great fear that when he dies there will be problems, domestic and from Russia.

May 7, 1979 I checked into the hostel on its opening day and then had a meal at a self service restaurant. I took a bus to the town of Stavigrad and from there walked a few miles to the gorge of Platvenic National Park. I hiked some distance up the canyon walls and saw some rock climbers ascending one of the walls. Afterwards I returned to the Borik-Zadar hostel.
