May 10, 1979 Darko took me downtown on the tram, after dropping Eva off at Yada s mother. Ordinarily he would take his car, but a new regulation prohibited his odd number licensed car from operating on Thursdays. Darko is a 37 year old architect working for a Zagreb firm and also doing some work for private customers.
I saw a number of the sights in the old downtown. Every day a cannon goes off at noon. In the afternoon the trams didn't run for awhile because Tito had come for a rare visit causing most traffic to halt.
On the TV news that evening we saw the report on his visit as well as the annual torch running event that takes place in honor of his birthday. Yada was especially critical of the leader. Apparently he maintains dozens of presidential residences throughout Yugoslavia.
Darko told me the house they live in is 1000 years old and he had spent the last 10 years redoing the interior and building modern furniture. He has done an excellent job.
