May 12, 1979 Darko and I went to the countryside north of Zagreb. The first stop was a TV tower and a small chapel atop a ski mountain. Then we went to a spa, a wine museum, and a memorial to a peasant who led an unsuccessful revolt against the feudal lords 400 years ago. He was burned at the stake.
The people in the countryside grew corn, wheat and grapes for wine. They dress much like they would have 50 years ago. We also saw a Croation castle, Tito s humble birthplace, and a church.
In the evening Yada and I went downtown to buy some things for Annette. The atmosphere downtown at night was very relaxed and easy going. People were out strolling the streets and window shopping. Most shopkeepers and and schoolchildren wore blue coats.
Yada told a joke: A few months ago a close associate of Tito died, and every country sent regards to the Yugoslavs except for Russia (Soviet Union). So the joke goes Russia said it was sorry for sending no one to the funeral. To make up for it, when Tito dies, everyone will come.
