Europe 1979 - Germany

May 30, 1979 To get on the 7:02 train to Freiberg, I had to get up early to eat breakfast, check out, walk to the station and buy the ticket. On the way to Freiberg there was much farmland including huge fields of yellow rapeseed plants used to make canola oil. Some of the scenery reminded me of the Black Hills.

May 31, 1979 From the hostel, I walked to downtown Freiberg, bought a map of the Black Forest hiking trails and looked over the city. The main cathedral had large, fine stained glass windows. The market outside the cathedral sold long bockwurst. Many street corners had drinking spouts of clean, cold, free running water. In the evening had some beers with Aussies and Chinese Americans.

Jun 1, 1979 Soon after I started on my walk into the Black Forest I became lost. Eventually I determined I was headed back to Freiberg and then met a Hamburg teacher who was looking for 3 lost teenage boys. Finally, I got on the right path and hiked with a group of Germans to St Peter.

Saw the many paintings in the local church. From St Peters the path continued up a difficult climb, but with great views at the top. All along the route there were many places to sit and fresh ice cold running mountain water.

I then descended to the bottom of a river valley, then followed the water falls into Gutenback. I camped in the woods just outside of town.
