Europe 1979 - Germany

Photo: Great Aunt Mary

Jun 10, 1979 Aunt Mary insisted I go to church and was very happy when I said I would. Hedwig showed me pictures of hers and Heinrichs honeymoon in Alpirsbach. Heinrich grows wheat, oats, and corn. Other crops nearby were hay and rye (roggin). He makes things for the farm including a field drag, automatic feed grinder, and bins. Tractors are generally much smaller than in the US. Currently he was working on remodeling the old pig sty which is part of the house, the same house where my grandmother was born.

Aunt Mary uses many pieces of my grandmothers old furniture, including her bed. Aunt Mary can t hear well, but her eyes were good.

The family takes care of the neighbors child, a girl. Young Heinrich, who spoke English, told me the wife came in at 4 AM for the child, but found me instead. Somehow I slept through it.

We went to a summerfest where the kids go to school. We had pork roast and wine pudding. We also went to Munster and saw its new hospital. Also an old church where, in olden times, the good bishop hung 3 heretics in cages from the church steeple until they starved to death. Little wonder as to why there are so many Catholics in this area. We had dinner of schnitzel, fries, mushrooms, and salad at a restaurant for about $5.
