France Walk - Saint Sever to Mauleon Licharre

October 9, 2017 Following the signs out of Orthez was easy. Though it was a pleasant day for walking, the route took us on hilly, muddy trails. We took a shortcut on the approach to Sauveterre de Bearn. It seemed that the camino route in places were very long and not necessary.

Using Louise phone, I managed to book two nights of stays. The telephone cell reception was iffy all day. After taking a break in Sauveterre de Bearn, we finished the last few kilometers of our 27 km (857 km total) walk to Osserain. We stayed at the home of Pascal, a very nice man who had lived there almost his entire life.

October 10, 2017 Pascal served us a big breakfast including egg, brioche, and homemade jam. We made good time getting to St Palais. The tourist office there was very helpful. We followed the wrong camino signs out of St Palais and walked a few extra kilometers. After backtracking, we did find the right route, but it was also unnecessarily long and difficult. There was an alternate route that would have been much easier.

When Louise & I got to the junction with road D302, we parted ways. She continued on to Ostabat, the way to St Jean Pied du Port. I followed D302 to Uhart Mixe and for me 18 km (875 km total) for the day. I stayed at l Escargot Bar, the same place I had stayed at 3 years before. The new owner of two years was Isabella. Her mother was there to help. There were 9 pilgrims for the night, including Dana an American from Virginia. Others were from Germany, Brittany, and Quebec. Most or all of them were walking from le Puy en Velay to St Jean Pied du Port. Isabella prepared a great dinner.

October 11, 2017 After a large breakfast, I took road D302 east, then north on D272, and east on D242 to Mauleon Licharre. I reached the city at 12:30 PM after walking 18 km (893 km total). After getting the key to the municipal refuge from the Mairie, I went for an 8 euro haircut from a woman barber.

Others staying there were 3 French men and Joanne from Poland. She spoke English, French & Spanish. They were walking from Lourdes to St Jean Pied du Port or beyond to Santiago. We had a pleasant dinner together.
