November 13, 1983 The flight arrived late at night in Guatemala City. A taxi took me to the Belmont Hotel, near downtown. I soon found out about the "black market" for American dollars. There was little incentive to exchange money in the banks.
Spent the day wandering around Guatemala City. The lack of gringo tourists was surprising to me. The afternoon brought rain. I went to the main square, a street market, and later saw a soccer game in the stadium. A large sign in the stadium said roughly "Patriotism is not a question of heroism, patriotism is a question of discipline."
