Photo: Sleeping bag on bed
Sleeping rooms normally were small, unheated rooms, with 2 small beds and limited bed linen. Usually I slept in my sleeping bag. At many guest houses, the lodge keepers provided extra blankets upon request.
The bed & room in the photo is typical, though some would be better and many worse.
Photo: Typical menu, in Karte
The prices in Nepali rupees (75 rupees per US dollar) varied from place to place. This menu is one of the more expensive. Most menus featured a wide range of vegetarian meals. If there were meat dishes, the amounts of meat were usually small. I, as most trekkers, walked 5 or 6 hours a day and burned up many calories. So it was important to eat a lot. At higher altitudes I lost my appetite, and consequently would lose weight while on a trek.
Photo: Typical water spout in village, Kalapani
The source of water was usually a stream or river and was siphoned through hoses to the house or public water spout as shown. At the public spout, people would wash themselves, wash their hair, wash clothes, etc. Though tempting, it was not polite to take pictures of natives during such private activities.
