Peru 1988 - Q'oyllur Riti

Tuesday, May 31, 1988 Another sunny day. We decided to take a bus back to Cuzco, rather than a truck. 30 people were squeezed into a 10 AM bus with seating for 25. The cost was 500 Intis ($3.00). A few days later we read that 5 people died at the festival, 3 from exposure and 2 from a fall. With inadequate protection, the Peruvians would stay at the top of the mountain where night temperatures reached near 0 degrees F.

The ride to Cuzco offered spectacular scenery. Much of the landscape has been heavily grazed and treeless. A couple of times we had to get out of the bus to help move it over an obstacle. Once the bus stopped to allow a passenger to purchase a large cuy (guinea pig) from a rural boy on the road. We got back to Cuzco at 6:00 PM, showered, and went to Chifa Angeles for dinner.
