Peru 1988 - Huaraz

Saturday, June 18, 1988 A young bull visited our camp in the morning. The ice crystals on the mountain plants was a beautiful sight. Again I led a misadventure as we attempted to take a shortcut to get back to the main trail. We ended up having to fight through thick growth, cross an ice cold stream with water up to our knees, and then climb up a steep vertical with full packs. The latter maneuver was dependent on the root systems of the tall grass we clutched as we pulled ourselves upward.

The rest of the day was not as exciting, but the varied sights of mountains and vegetation were interesting. We camped in a large stone pen for burros. It provided good protection from the wind, but not the braying of local burros.
