Sunday, June 19, 1988 We had breakfast of the last of our food, except for a few figs and nuts. The trail down was fairly steep in places. We came upon a group of burros coming toward us, so we waited for them to pass on the narrow trail. One burro fell to its knees and then slid down the steep shale slope toward the river below. We helped two guides get the burro back on its feet and up to the trail, one guide lifted and carried, in his bare feet, each of the two heavy boxes back to the trail. There they loaded the boxes again on the burro's back.
Without further incident, we reached Cashapampa in mid afternoon and had a cold coke. Luckily, we caught the first truck to Caraz that day. We shared the ride with climbers from Germany, France, and the US. We got to Caraz just in time to catch a 3 PM bus to Huaraz. That night in Huaraz we had an excellent pizza at Pizza Tocina.
