Peru 1988 - Huaraz

Photo: Teachers on strike

Monday, June 20, 1988 At Patricks Creperie, I had a muesli breakfast, mostly corn flakes and rice krispies. We then washed clothes. Hugo served us a lunch which included bread his mother had made. His mother had taken his brother, Freddy, to Lima to see a specialist for Freddy's mental deficiency.

Almost every day there would be teacher strikes in the plaza. They wanted more money. Hugo showed us a tear gas canister the police had used on the teachers. We saw the museum of anthropology and I attempted to sell my Coleman stove. No one seemed very interested in my stove. That night we had dinner at Los Payas with Hugo and Anna.

Tuesday, June 21, 1988 We got up early with Hugo to go see Lago Churop. When we agreed to pay 900 Intis for a 12 mile taxi ride to Pitek, we thought the Huaraz taxi driver was ripping us off. However, we had to help move rocks on the very rough road so that the taxi could get by. Pitek is a few small houses below Lago Churop. The trail to Churop was fairly steep in places and offered great views of the valley below. Lago Churop was a very high (15.000'), beautiful lake.

Unfortunately, we were in such a hurry in the morning that I was not able to get a cup of coffee. For me, it was a bad day. We hiked back to Huaraz, about 14 miles one way. It was interesting walking along this campesino trail and seeing their houses, etc. We saw a local band practicing and also met the porter and son we had talked to at the top of Punta Union. Dinner was at a cheap chicken restaurant.
