Russia 1985 - Caucasus 1st Days

At 8:00 we were fed our supper. Supper was usually similar to lunch, but without the soup. Following that the four of us, Helga, Susan, Yvonne, and myself met with Lonya to discuss equipment and food. Lonya was disappointed to hear that the women didn't care for the Russian pork, eggs, sugar and other things he liked. An Austrian Primus stove was to be our only stove. Lonya found me a pair of crampons for the expected ice field walk over Becho Pass.

That night Mitch fell asleep before I did and snored continuously. His snores would progressively grow louder over several minutes and then he would stop. After an unpredictable silent period, his snoring would start again. The worst part for me was the silent period, waiting for the inevitable snores to start again.

At 1:00 AM I gave up and hauled my sleeping bag outside to the terrace of the 5th floor room to escape the noise.
