Russia 1985 - Svanetia Trek

Photo: Tea & rest stop

Walking or sliding down the easy slopes, we had entered the republic of Georgia. However we soon encountered more crevasses and snow covered trails with much exposure. I was relieved when the trail became much easier. During our descent down the side of the last slope we crossed many snow melt mountain streams and even filled our water bottles with the delicious water.

At the bottom everyone stripped off most clothes, had tea and pate, and dried wet clothes. We hiked about two more hours to an open meadow beside a river, and camped for the night. The conversation around the campfire was interesting as we discussed Soviet vs USA propaganda, freedom in the USSR, religion, and other sensitive subjects. Although we did not always agree it was a friendly discussion.
