May 17, 2001 Took the bus to Coimbre, a city with a large university on the hill above downtown. The city has many old, narrow streets that are fun to walk.
The next day I find a barber on a side street and get a haircut. He understood enough English to know what I wanted. I have not attempted to speak much Portuguese. The language is very different from Spanish, and locals do not like being spoken to in Spanish.
I visited the Bucaco Forest that was about a 45 minute bus ride from Coimbre. The trails in the small forest went by many religious sites. Much of the forest was planted by Carmelite monks 400 years ago.

May 20, 2001 I travel to Porto. A popular tourist activity is taking guided tours of the port wine companies. The Taylor wine tour that I took was interesting. At the end tourists are invited to try samples.
