Spain 2001 - Camino de Santiago

Photo: Ralph and El Ganso refugio

At the Cowboy Meson, the only cafe in town, I get directions to the refugio. The refugio has 12 bunks in a single room of an old building. No toilet, no water, no nothing else. The town fountain is only 15 yards away and becomes our water source. There was no charge for the refugio, but it did have a box for donations.

Other pilgrims were Jim, a financial advisor from Minneapolis, Matt & Angie, college students from Texas, and two French women. All had been walking for a few weeks and were able to tell me what to expect.

Hanging around the refugio was a young homeless dog. Though very friendly, he bit Matt a few times. Jim & I ate chorizo and empanada bocadillos at the Cowboy Meson. The cafe flew a Texas flag that was visible from anywhere in El Ganso.
