Spain 2001 - Camino de Santiago

Photo: Ralph at border with Galacia & Leon

May 28, 2001 I was up and on the road as the sun was coming up. At Boteira I had a coffee and tostada at a nice bar managed by a friendly female barkeeper. About 10:00 AM I got to Tricastela. The next 7 miles were difficult. At times I was not always sure I was on the Camino and part of the path was damaged. A river crossing was gone and some workers were trying to position a couple of trees in the river. I managed to get across without getting soaked.

I also crossed the border into the region of Galacia. I had been in Leon up to that point. Santiago felt much closer.

At Samos I had lunch and then found the refugio that was part of the monastery. Walked about 14 miles. That afternoon I took a tour of the large monastery, a very impressive place. Later that evening I and others attended a vespers service. Only a few monks lived in the monastery, where once there had been hundreds.

Others at the refugio were, Yves & Jacqueline, Alice from Oregon, Juan from Barcelona, and Marie Antonette Bonhomme from Paris. Marie was 65 and started the walk from her home. She had dreamed about doing the Camino for many years. She said her daughters thought she was a little crazy.
