May 29, 2001 Feeling good, I got off to an early 5:30 AM start. Soon I had a choice of following the Camino or taking the alternate busy road to Sarria. I took the Camino, but unfortunately the yellow arrows led me to a river with a missing bridge. I tried to cross the river, but the opposite bank was too deep. In my attempt I heaved my backpack from the shallow middle of the stream to the opposite bank, but the pack fell back into the stream. At that point I gave up and walked back to the road also leading to Sarria.
I stopped in the first bar in Sarria and had breakfast. Juan was also there. With him, he had Maries walking stick that she mistakenly left behind in Samos. About 30 minutes later we were joined by Yves and Jacqueline. We walked together for the next 6 miles, conversing in a mixture of bad French, Spanish, and English. Yves had to rest, so Juan and I pushed on to Portomarin.
I walked officially about 21 miles, but am sure I walked at least an additional 2 miles. The refugio was very large and there were many cafes in town.
