Spain 2001 - Camino de Santiago

Photo: Luigi enjoying lunch

May 31, 2001 I left in the dark, about 6:00 AM. Soon an old Italian man, Luigi, caught up with me. He had started walking in Italy and was excited to have just 2 days left. He walked in sandals, having worn out his shoes. With his long white beard, staff, and lean frame he made quite an impression. When I first saw him, I thought he looked like Jesus or some biblical figure. Other pilgrims had nicknamed him Jesus .

In Azura, Luigi had a large 12 ounce espresso for breakfast. Sometimes he would silently pray the rosary while we were walking.

Later that morning we came across a catholic mass being said on a forest trail for 60 other London bikers. The bikers had started in Leon and had a support van plus priests.

At 11 AM we stopped at a roadside snackbar. Luigi had a ham bocadilla and 2 beers. I had some fruit and juice drink. We continued on to Arco de Pino, a distance of 20 miles for me. Luigi continued on to Monte de Goza.
