Photo: Incense burner
June 1, 2001 The last 11 miles to Santiago seemed much longer. The road went all four directions: north, south, east, and west. I got to the Santiago Pilgrims Office about 11 AM and left my backpack there until the afternoon.
I attended the Pilgrims Mass at noon. The cathedral was very crowded with pilgrims and tourists. At the end of mass a huge incense burner was hoisted on a rope high above the alter and swung in a great arc above the crowd. The smoky incense fills the church. Very impressive.
I got a bed at the Monte de Gozo refugio, washed clothes, and relaxed. It was good to let my blisters heal over the next couple of days.
