Spain 2024 - Albergue San Nicolas de Flue

When I arrived I was greeted by the 3 hospitaleras finishing their 2+ weeks work. They were a Brazilian women and 2 Canadians, Dena & Jackie. Dena, Jackie & I soon realized we had taken the same zoom spanish class for new hospitaleros. They were very helpful in showing me where things were and how certain duties were carried out.

The other hospitaleros that I worked with were Pedro, a Spanish man from the Canary Islands, and the two Italians, Anna and Pietro. Anna, who had worked as a hospitalero several times before (including here), was our leader. The other two had also had past experiences as a hospitalero.

Our duties included opening the albergue up in the morning and closing it at night, cleaning the sleeping rooms, the kitchen and the bathrooms. In the afternoons and evenings we would work 2 shifts of 4 hours each registering the pilgrims as they arrived at the albergue. Pedro and I worked together signing pilgrims in and helping them with anything they needed.

Frequently we would see Roger, a representative of the camino association, and father Miguel. Father Miguel would collect the money from the donation box. Pilgrims could donate by putting money in the donation box, or by using a credit card.
